Where to stay in New Jersey

Do not search “hotels in New Jersey.” The state is a set of different weekends. A casino tower in Atlantic City, a Victorian inn in Cape May, a PATH-side room in Hoboken, and a motel two towns off the Parkway are not interchangeable inventory. Pick the town first. Then pick the building.

This is an independent guide. It is not the official New Jersey tourism office. Some links below are affiliate bookings.

Pick a base first

• No car, leaving from New York — Hoboken, Jersey City, or Asbury Park.
• No car, leaving from Philadelphia — Princeton. Cape May only if you take the bus and stay in the historic district.
• Beach plus town — Asbury Park or Cape May.
• Beach plus kids and rides — Point Pleasant, Ocean City, Wildwoods. Book the town, not “the Shore.”
• Casinos or a free beach with a skyline — Atlantic City.
• Quiet and walkable — Cape May, Ocean Grove, the Delaware River towns.
• Campus and a Corridor train — Princeton.
• Hikes — a room near the Water Gap or in the Skylands, not a Hudson waterfront “because it’s New Jersey.”
• Late landing at Newark — a hotel near EWR or in the Ironbound. Do not drive to Cape May that night.

The Jersey Shore

Sleep in the town you will still be standing in at 9 p.m. A cheaper rate two exits away is a parking weekend. Boardwalk hotels put you on the planks. A block inland is quieter and usually easier for a car. Summer Saturdays want two nights and take the rate they want.

Asbury, Long Branch, Point Pleasant, and the rest of Monmouth are one market. Long Beach Island is another — more rentals than hotels, and you need the bridge. Details: Jersey Shore hotels.

Cape May

The local product is the inn: a Victorian house, breakfast, a porch, a walk to the mall and the beach. Hotels on the water if you want a lobby. Motels west of the district if you want the car next to the door. Shoulder season is when this town makes financial sense.

Hoboken and Jersey City

You are buying a view and a PATH ride, not a beach. Waterfront rooms cost Midtown-adjacent money and save you Midtown. Inland rooms in Hoboken are fine if you like walking to the river. Jersey City waterfront is newer glass; downtown is brick. Do not book Journal Square by accident and call it a waterfront weekend.

Princeton and the river towns

Princeton: a hotel or inn in walking distance of Nassau Street, or you will spend the weekend in a campus shuttle. Lambertville and the Delaware towns: small inns, and New Hope is across the bridge if you want Pennsylvania for dinner. These are walkable weekends. They collapse if the room is ten miles out.

The airport night

Newark Liberty is its own lodging problem. If the flight lands after 9 p.m. and the next day’s plan is the Shore, sleep near the airport. AirTrain and NJ Transit make EWR usable. JFK and LaGuardia add a borough you did not ask for. More: Airports for a New Jersey trip.

When to book

July and August Shore weekends disappear first, then holiday weekends, then anything that coincides with a festival or a stadium date. Cape May inns and Asbury boardwalk hotels are the two inventories that punish hesitation. Midweek and May or September are how you stay on the water without paying the Saturday tax.

Two-night minimums are not a rumor. If you only have Saturday night in July, change the town or change the month.
