Congress Hall Cape May – Historic Seaside Hotel

Discover one of Cape May’s most iconic landmarks, where Victorian elegance, beautiful ocean views and traditional American seaside charm come together.

Congress Hall is one of the most famous historic hotels in Cape May, New Jersey. Located just steps from the beach, this elegant seaside landmark has welcomed visitors for more than two centuries.

With its distinctive yellow exterior, beautiful architecture and fascinating history, Congress Hall is much more than a place to stay. It is an attraction in its own right and an important part of Cape May’s unique character.

A Hotel with a Fascinating History

Congress Hall first opened in 1816 as a boarding house established by Thomas H. Hughes.

Over the following decades, it developed into a fashionable seaside resort, attracting prominent visitors and becoming an important part of Cape May’s tourism history.

The present building dates from 1879, following a devastating fire that destroyed the earlier hotel.

Today, Congress Hall retains its historic atmosphere while offering modern accommodation, restaurants and leisure facilities.

Enjoy the Beach and Ocean Views

One of the greatest attractions of Congress Hall is its beautiful location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

The hotel offers direct access to Cape May’s sandy beaches, making it particularly appealing during the summer months.

Guests can enjoy the outdoor swimming pool, relax on the hotel’s spacious lawn or explore the nearby Washington Street Mall, where historic buildings house independent shops, cafés and restaurants.

Restaurants and Entertainment

You do not need to stay overnight to experience some of Congress Hall’s atmosphere.

The hotel is home to several dining and entertainment venues, including the Blue Pig Tavern, which serves American cuisine in a relaxed historic setting.

Depending on the season, visitors can also enjoy special events and activities at the hotel.

My tip: Even if you are staying elsewhere in Cape May, take a walk past Congress Hall and enjoy its beautiful architecture. Combine your visit with a stroll along the beach and lunch in the historic town centre.
