Do not book “a hotel on the Jersey Shore.” Book a town. Asbury Park, Long Branch, Point Pleasant, Seaside, Long Beach Island, Atlantic City, and the Wildwoods share a coastline and almost nothing else as lodging. The wrong town is a parking weekend.

The rule
Sleep in the town you will still be standing in at 9 p.m. A cheaper rate two exits down the Parkway is how you spend Saturday in the car. Boardwalk-front rooms put you on the planks. A block inland is quieter and usually easier for a car. “Ocean view” means ask which way the window points.
By stretch
Monmouth (Long Branch, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Bradley Beach, Belmar, Spring Lake, Manasquan): train towns on the Coast Line. Asbury is music and a smaller boardwalk. Ocean Grove and Spring Lake are quieter and more porch. Long Branch is the rebuilt beachfront with bigger hotels.
Ocean County north (Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head, Seaside Heights): Point Pleasant is family boards and Jenkinson’s. Bay Head is the end of the line and mostly houses. Seaside is louder on purpose.
Long Beach Island: rentals first, motels second, no useful train. Book Beach Haven or Ship Bottom unless you have a reason to be at Barnegat Light. The causeway is part of the stay.
Atlantic City: casino towers on the boards or in the Marina, plus a few non-gaming rooms. Free beach. Different city. Place page: Atlantic City.
Cape May County except Cape May city: Wildwoods motels and doo-wop if that is the trip. Stone Harbor and Avalon if the budget is different. Cape May city itself: Cape May inns and hotels.
Hotel, motel, house
- Two nights in a hotel facing the boards — Asbury, Long Branch, Point Pleasant, Atlantic City.
- Motel with the car at the door — still the Shore default outside the pretty blocks.
- Week-long house — LBI and many Cape May County towns. Not a Friday-night product.
- Inn with breakfast — usually Cape May, sometimes Spring Lake or Ocean Grove. Do not expect that inventory in Seaside.
When rates go stupid
July and August weekends, holiday weekends, and anything that coincides with a festival or a casino residency. Two-night minimums are normal. Midweek and May or September are how you stay on the water without paying the Saturday tax. A January ocean-view in Atlantic City is a different purchase from a July Saturday in Asbury.
Parking
A rate that “includes parking” is worth more than a prettier room plus three lots. Shore towns sell parking as a product. Ask where the car goes before you book the block that photographs well.
