This is the New Jersey that is not an exit number. Hills, a river gap, the highest point in the state, and trailheads that expect shoes. You need a car. You need a weather window. You do not need a boardwalk.
This is an independent guide. It is not the official New Jersey tourism office.
Why go
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area sits on both banks of the river. The New Jersey side holds trailheads, rural valleys, and pieces of the Appalachian Trail. High Point State Park, further north, is the 1,800-foot roof of New Jersey and a monument you can climb when it is open. Stokes State Forest fills the space between with more miles than a weekend can use.
Skip this if the group will not walk. The river towns weekend is the flatter version of “not the Shore.”
How to get there
Drive. I-80 west toward the Gap is the usual approach from North Jersey and New York. From Philadelphia the roads are longer and more diagonal. There is no honest train-to-trailhead story. Fill the tank before the last town that looks like a town.
Parking at popular trailheads fills on October Saturdays. Have a second hike in mind.
Where to stay
A room near the Gap or in the small towns on the New Jersey side so dawn is not an hour of highway. Cabins and inns exist; chain rooms on I-80 exist too and they feel like I-80. Pennsylvania’s Poconos are next door if the New Jersey inventory is gone — say so to yourself, do not pretend you stayed in the Skylands.
Saturday
One real hike, not three viewpoints from the car. On the Gap, Mount Tammany via the Red Dot (steep, rocky, short) is the hike people mean; the Blue Blaze down makes a loop. It is work. Wear the shoes. Buttermilk Falls is the waterfall outing when conditions allow — check closures.
Afternoon: a second short walk or the river. Dinner in the nearest town that is still serving. These kitchens do not run Midtown hours.
Sunday
High Point if the monument and the view are the souvenir. Confirm the tower is open before you promise the steps. Or more Stokes miles if Saturday was the Gap. Leave time for the drive home; I-80 east on a Sunday evening is still a highway with everyone else on it.
What to pack
Shoes with grip, water, a layer, insect season as advertised. Cell service drops in the valleys. The Gap is a national recreation area with its own alerts. After rain the rocks are worse than the map looks.
Season
October is the point: color, cooler climbs, crowded lots. May and June are green and wet. Summer is humid and popular with people who also own kayaks. Winter is quiet and can be a different sport. Do not treat January like July with a jacket.
