Two Hudson County cities face Manhattan from the New Jersey bank. Hoboken is the tight grid. Jersey City is the larger, split one. Together they are where New Jersey meets the skyline without becoming the Shore.

Hoboken
A square mile that behaves like a small city: Washington Street for shops and dinner, side streets for the rooms people actually live in, Hoboken Terminal as the hinge for PATH, NJ Transit, light rail, and ferries. The waterfront walkway and the piers (Pier A, Pier C) are why visitors come. The view is Lower Manhattan and the harbor.
It is walkable. It is not quiet on a Saturday night near Washington. Sleep a few blocks inland if that matters.
Jersey City
Do not treat it as one neighborhood.
- Exchange Place and Newport — glass, PATH, the waterfront promenade, hotel towers. This is the visitor default.
- Downtown / Historic Downtown — brick, restaurants, a different evening than the waterfront bars.
- Liberty State Park — lawn, Empty Sky 9/11 memorial, Liberty Science Center, ferries toward Ellis Island and the Statue. Not a PATH stop; light rail or a walk from Exchange Place.
- Journal Square — a transit hub and a local center. Not the waterfront weekend unless you meant it.
The Heights sit up the hill. Fine to live in. Not the first night.
The walkway
The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway is the regional idea: a path along the river from Bayonne toward the Bridge. In these two cities you get the usable miles. Construction detours are normal. Follow posted signs, not a photo from 2018.
Where to stay
Hoboken waterfront for the view. Hoboken inland for sleep. Jersey City waterfront for newer rooms and a fast PATH to the World Trade Center. Downtown Jersey City for brick. Do not book Journal Square and caption it as a river weekend.
Getting there
PATH is the system. Hoboken Terminal and the Jersey City stations are the doors. Ferries are the prettier fare. NJ Transit rail into Hoboken serves people who already live on those lines. Driving into Manhattan as part of a stay here is a mistake; park on this side.

Eat
Hoboken still eats like a city with an Italian-American past and a dining street present. Jersey City is wider: waterfront hotel rooms, downtown tables, and a few buildings that behave like food halls. One neighborhood per evening.
